Sylvia Plath was an American poet, novelist, and short storey writer who lived from October 27, 1932 until February 11, 1963. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and attended Smith College and Newnham College at the University of Cambridge before becoming a well-known poet and author. She married fellow poet Ted Hughes in 1956, and the couple had two children, Frieda and Nicholas, while living in the United States and later England. Plath battled depression for much of her adult life and committed herself in 1963. The circumstances of her life and death, as well as her work and legacy, have sparked debate. Plath is most known for her two published collections, The Colossus and Other Poems and Ariel, which are credited with popularising confessional poetry. For The Collected Poems, she received a Pulitzer Prize posthumously in 1982. She also authored The Bell Jar, a semi-autobiographical book that was released not long before she died.
