If there is a TV show that defined the '90s, that's Friends, for sure. This sit-com aired for ten years, and its impact in popular culture was monumental. At one point, women started copying Jennifer Aniston's different haircuts. Fans followed the lives of Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross throughout the ten seasons and got to see them grow as people, fall in love, and find their true passions.
Even today, Friends still attracts new fans with their relatable yet comedic storylines. This article will focus on the season that started it all and some of its best episodes according to IMDb.
10 The One With The Ick Factor - 8.3/10
It says a lot about the show that the last episode in the top ten received a rating of 8,3. During this one, Monica finds out that the guy she had been dating had lied about his age. That wouldn't have been that big of a deal for her if it wasn't because he turned out to be in high school. While she tries to find a way to let him down easy, Chandler has his own problem to manage. He discovers that, since he was promoted, everyone in his office dislikes him and tries to find a way to earn their friendship back.
9 The One With The Candy Hearts - 8.3/10
This episode tells the story of a complicated Valentine's Day. The three girls are single after a series of bad experiences with men and decide that, instead of going on dates, they're going to spend a girls' night. However, things take a weird turn when Phoebe suggest they do a cleansing by burning their exes' possessions and it gets out of control. In the meantime, Ross goes on a date and has the misfortune of running into his ex-wife Carol... with her new girlfriend, Susan. Joey and Chandler are the only ones having a decent night, as Joey goes out with a great girl and Chandler runs into an old lover.
8 The One Where Monica Gets A Roommate - 8.3/10
This episode was the very first one of the series, and for a premiere, the score is impressive. The audience gets introduced to the six main characters when Rachel enters the famous coffee shop, Central Perk, in a soaking wet wedding dress. She explains how she left her fiancé at the altar and needs a place to stay, and she becomes Monica's roommate.
Having Rachel in town awakens old feelings in Ross, who had a crush on her in high school, and takes his mind from his divorce and the fact that his ex-wife left him for another woman.
7 The One With Two Parts: Part 2 - 8.5/10
This one is the continuation of a previous episode in which Joey falls in love with Phoebe's twin, Ursula, with whom Phoebe doesn't get along at all, and it creates tension in their friendship. Phoebe feels like she's losing Joey as he starts prioritizing his relationship with Ursula.
Monica and Rachel face their own problems when Rachel breaks her ankle and takes her friend's identity to get insurance. Monica is too nervous about getting caught, and even more when Rachel sets up double dates with two of the doctors that assisted her.
6 The One With The East German Laundry Detergent - 8.5/10
In this episode, Ross' crush on Rachel intensifies. He wants to spend time with her desperately, so he suggests they go do their laundry together. Once they get there, he finds out she has never done laundry before, and they have a great time as he teaches her.
The rest of the friends are busy solving Chandler and Joey's love lives, as Phoebe helps Chandler break up with Janice, and Monica poses as Joey's girlfriend to go on a double date and split up a couple.
5 The One With The Birth - 8.7/10
When this episode starts, Ross is on his way to the hospital to see the birth of his child. However, things are not easy once he gets there. He and Susan, his ex-wife Carol's partner get competitive, and Carol finally throws both of them out of the delivery room. Luckily, they make up in time for the baby boy's birth.
Joey, who went to the hospital with Ross, ends up assisting a single mother while she gives birth. This is one of the first times in the show viewers get to appreciate a more mature side of him.
4 The One With The Boobies - 8.7/10
A lot of crazy things happen in this episode. For starters, Chandler walks into the apartment without knocking (as always) and accidentally sees Rachel's breasts. During the rest of the episode, Rachel tries to get revenge.
Meanwhile, Joey finds out that his father is cheating on his mom and gets very upset, but then his mom tells him she already knew. The parents come to an arrangement that doesn't convince Joey, but he concludes that he needs to let them make their own decisions.
3 The One With All The Poker - 8.8/10
Rachel is sick of being a waitress, and she interviews for a job in fashion. As she goes through the many stages of the selection process, the guys teach the girls how to play poker, and they start playing nightly. At first, the three girls can't play, but then Rachel becomes surprisingly good, and Ross feels threatened, especially considering he's in love with her. Later, when Rachel receives a call saying she didn't get the job, Ross feels bad for how he treated her and decides to let her win.
2 The One Where Rachel Finds Out - 8.9/10
It's Rachel's birthday, and Ross bought her a very romantic and thoughtful gift, but a work trip to China comes up at the last second. During the party, Rachel opens her present, and she's speechless at how beautiful it is. That's when Chandler accidentally reveals Ross' feelings for her, shocking her even more. Rachel takes her time to think about what to do with that information, and finally decides she wants to give Ross a chance and runs to pick him up at the airport.
1 The One With The Blackout - 9/10
During a blackout, Joey convinces Ross to tell Rachel how he feels. Unfortunately, things keep getting in the way, and by the time he works up the courage to talk to her, a handsome neighbor makes his move first, breaking his heart.
The only friend who's not in the apartment at the time is Chandler, who is having the time of his life, stuck in an ATM vestibule with one of his favorite models. He doesn't dare to flirt with him, but they do end up having a fun, friendly evening.
